MOROCCO GOVT. PLEDGE RECONSTRUCTION PROGRAM AIMED EARTHQUAKE AFTERMATH

In the emotionally charged wake of the horrendous earthquake that hit central Morocco this past Friday, a ministerial committee held a meeting today in Rabat to address the urgent need for reconstructing damaged homes in the affected regions. 

Chaired by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, the committee worked on formulating a comprehensive plan to reconstruct demolished homes and provide compensation for individuals who lost their homes. 

The exact details of the plan will be released in the following days, Akhannouch told the press after the meeting.

The primary objective of the committee is to develop a clear and detailed proposal for aiding the affected population. 

Prime Minister Akhannouch also emphasized that, at this stage, the focus is on finding immediate solutions to accommodate those who have been displaced as a result of the earthquake.

King Mohammed VI had issued a number of instructions in response to the earthquake during a recent working session, including establishing the ministerial committee.

Attending the meeting were Minister of Interior Abdelwafi Laftit, Minister of Economy and Finance Nadia Fettah, Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka, and Minister of Health and Social Protection Khaled Ait Taleb, among others.

The earthquake, which hit central Morocco on Friday night, claimed over 2,400 lives and caused significant property damage. 

While the exact damage is still to be assessed, reports from earthquake-struck areas suggest that whole villages were flattened. In addition, large neighborhoods in a number of cities were reduced to ruins, leaving survivors without shelter.
